Visit the Lagos Caves by Train

10/6/2013

A tip when visiting Lagos, (30 minutes drive West of Casa Jovic), is to take the road-train out to see the caves at the end of the headland.

Simply head for the marina. Catch the road train (it runs every hour) and it will transport you along the harbour front and eventually to Farol da Ponta da Piedade, the lighthouse perched above the hundreds of caves along that part of the coast. From the lighthouse you can descend by foot to pick up one of the boats which provide tours of the caves. The walk down is a little steep, but the boat trip is well worth it. No two visitors have seen the same views, such is the changing nature (erosion) of the caves. It's unforgettable.

Remember to get a beer or an ice cream when you get back to the stop to wait for the next train. It's so refreshing!  But, make sure you check the times of the last train back. It often stops at 5pm.
